Muscles, joints and nerves should function harmoniously to facilitate normal healthy posture and movement. This balance is sometimes upset by injury, disease or misuse. The aim of physiotherapy is to restore this harmony. Usually an underlying movement imbalance is found, whereby certain parts are relatively strong, stiff and inflexible, creating increased stress and strain and therefore pain on relatively weak & wobbly parts!

We do not believe in treatment protocols, everybody is different! We have a selection of 'tools' to treat your own unique individual problem. Manual (hands on) therapy releases the stiff/tight areas of your body, exercise therapy helps increase mobility in the stiff areas and increases strength & stability in the weak/unsupported areas (these are usually the areas that produce pain!). Physiotherapy should identify faulty posture and movement patterns and facilitate correction of these to help reduce the chance of recurring problems.

Assessment & Treatment: What to expect

At Lakeland & Lunesdale Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic Ltd, you will receive a comprehensive professional assessment. This is vital in order to establish the pattern and behaviour of your condition through appropriate questioning and listening to you. Then a clinical impression/diagnosis is confirmed by a thorough clinical examination in the form of observing posture & movements, and carrying out specific tests, depending on your presentation.

Your Physiotherapist will explain the assessment findings and an appropriate individual treatment plan can be proposed.

Treatments offered:

  • Advice & education about self management of your problem
  • Hands on treatment for loosening the stiff inflexible areas of your body
  • Exercises designed for your individual problem to strengthen & improve muscle control of the painful /weak /wobbly areas
  • Correction of faulty posture & movement patterns
  • Taping techniques for support, pain relief, improved muscle function/ alignment/posture
  • Ultrasound treatment, sometimes indicated for ligament or tendon injuries
  • Traction, occasionally indicated for back or neck problems
  • Acupuncture (Some Physiotherapists use this as an adjunct to treatment)

Occasionally following assessment, your Physiotherapist may feel that further medical investigations are necessary before treatment is commenced. Your Physiotherapist may need to liase with your GP and/or specialist to facilitate this.

In order to be able to perform a comprehensive assessment, it is often helpful to undress down to your undergarments. If you feel more comfortable in a small pair of shorts please bring some with you or we can provide some. Pain is deceptive! Sometimes even if the pain is in your toes, the problem could be related to your back, or likewise pain in your hand could be caused by a neck/shoulder problem. The Physiotherapist therefore may need to examine areas of the body distant from the pain. If you do not wish to undress please feel free to discuss this with your Physiotherapist
